The look

Excerpt

Not the usual nod of professional acknowledgment, not the perfunctory, polite glance in meetings. This was different. Held a little too long. Just enough to make her feel the absence of space between them, even when there were feet of it.

Now, in the low hum of the office, she caught him again. Across the glass-walled conference room, his eyes rested on her, patient and considering. She didn’t look away. Neither did he.

A slow, measured sip of his coffee. A tilt of his head. The flick of his thumb over his bottom lip, almost absentminded.

A ripple of something sharp and unsaid moved through her. She shouldn’t, she wouldn’t.

But her breath was coming too fast. She turned back to her screen, fingers hovering over the keyboard, but her mind pulsed with new questions.

How long had he been looking at her like that? And why was she only noticing now? And, most dangerous of all, how far would she let herself go if he ever decided to close the distance?
